A Cleaner Hydrolysis
Dow Haltermann Custom Processing’s proprietary hydrolysis technology can turn fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) into fatty acids and methanol. The key benefit over other hydrolysis technology is that the FAME process has almost no side reactions or byproducts to dispose of. That reduces overall cost and virtually eliminates environmental or safety issues related to other hydrolysis technology.

The process can be performed by either batch or continuous process, at sites in Antwerp, Belgium, or Teesside, U.K. At the Antwerp site, a specially designed hydrolysis column, built in 2001, has a production capability of 20,000 tonnes of fatty acid final product when run in continuous mode. Although this column was built and designated exclusively for hydrolysis projects, it has demonstrated superior results in producing all kinds of large quantities of esters.
